Test Your Garage Door Auto-Reverse Before It Fails

A door that will not reverse can close on a person, a pet, or a vehicle. A look at the sensors, and a test of the auto-reverse, is often enough to catch a problem before it fails when it matters.

Photo-eye sensors sit near the floor, where they collect dust, get bumped by bins or bikes, and drift out of line. Wiring can loosen. Hardware can wear. None of that is obvious until the door no longer stops when something is in the way.

Checking the safety system is a short look, not a repair job. You are confirming that the sensors are clear and mounted, that the door still reverses, and that nothing about the hardware looks unsafe. If it does not pass, a garage door technician should inspect it.

Auto-reverse is the opener’s job of stopping a closing door and sending it back up when something is in the path. It is meant to protect people, pets, and objects in the opening — not to make the door faster or quieter.

Photo-eye safety sensors sit on each side of the opening, usually a few inches off the floor. One sends a beam, the other receives it. If that beam is blocked while the door is closing, the door should reverse. If the sensors are dirty, blocked, or misaligned, the system may not see an obstruction at all.

What should you check on the sensors and hardware?

Start with the photo-eyes, then the wiring. Leave springs and cables alone.

Dirty, blocked, or misaligned sensors

Photo-eyes sit low on each side of the opening. Look for dust, cobwebs, mud, or anything sitting in front of the lenses. If a sensor looks twisted, bumped, or pointed away from its pair, the beam may not line up.

Secure mounting on both sides

Both sensors should be firmly attached to the track or wall bracket, not hanging, spinning, or held on by a loose fastener. A sensor that can be knocked out of line will not protect the opening reliably.

Damaged or loose sensor wiring

Follow the visible wire from each sensor without pulling on it. Look for pinched, cut, chewed, or dangling cable, and for connections that have come apart. Wiring problems belong with a garage door technician.

Loose or damaged visible hardware

From a safe place beside the opening, look at hinges, brackets, rollers, and the track. Bent track, missing fasteners, or hardware that looks ready to come off is a reason to stop using the door and call a professional.

Test the beam. Watch how the door travels.

Stand to the side of the opening, not in the door’s path. Start the door closing, then interrupt the sensor beam with a broom handle or similar object. The door should stop and reverse. Never use a person, a pet, or a body part as the test object.

Watch whether the door closes smoothly and evenly, without tilting, binding, or stopping partway. Listen for grinding, scraping, or jerking. Those sounds, or a door that will not reverse when the beam is broken, mean stop using the automatic close and call a garage door technician.

Leave springs, cables, and failed systems to a technician.

Garage door springs and lift cables are under high tension. Do not loosen, adjust, repair, or handle them. A broken spring, a frayed cable, or hardware that looks ready to give way is not a DIY fix. Keep people and vehicles clear of the door.

Call a garage door technician if the door does not reverse, the sensors will not stay aligned, wiring looks damaged, travel is uneven, or you hear unusual noises. Checking the system is useful. Working on high-tension parts is not worth the injury risk.
